Adjustable twin-tube damper physical model

The ever-present need for a high-fidelity, easily identifiable and tunable model suitable for vehicle dynamics simulations motivated the development of an improved damper model. The model is capable of representing the behavior of a modern twin-tube damper under different regimes, and allows for virtual tuning of parameters directly related to the physical parameters of the damper. This presentation will also cover the characterization and parameters identification routines developed alongside the model.

The physical modeling of tire-road interaction phenomena, approached in a multi-physics MF-based simulation platform, allows the prediction and reproduction of local distribution of tire temperature, tread wear and adherence within the contact patch, also accounting for road texture roughness and tread compound characteristics. Such a tool, comprising thermoRIDE/adheRIDE models, was awarded Tire Technology of the Year in 2018 and Vehicle Dynamics Tool of the Year in 2019. It has been implemented profitably in off-line and online vehicle dynamics simulations.

From click to performance – damper dynamics and static damper graphs

A large number of engineers with race teams and manufacturers use the static damper graph as their sole information when adjusting dampers. In a steady-state situation, this is a reasonable approach. The only problem is that the life of a damper is highly dynamic, and the actual response can be far off from the static graph used for making decisions. This workshop will discuss the physics of how the static and dynamic response of the damper can affect the performance of the vehicle. The discussion will introduce the balancing required between opposing needs and competing traits when trying to improve the overall performance of the vehicle for a specific track, driver and session.

From valve to wheel – racing engine and vehicle development

Rotronics was born to solve 500cc two-stroke bike development, engine dyno and chassis dyno problems. Based on the company's 30 years' experience, it offers a wide range of tools to help clients boost their performance. From valve to wheel, Rotronics offers valvetrain, flow bench, engine and vehicle testbeds. Products include a standard roller dyno 4WD synchronized up to 400km/h, and a smart hub-dyno concept where users can run 4WD synchronized or control each wheel speed independently. Therefore, the transmission strategy is also balanced. Speed offset could be applied between front/rear/left/right.

An aerodynamic master class

With fun examples, Willem will explain the main concepts behind aerodynamics. He will try to give you a mental picture of what happens with the molecules of the air as they move around objects to “feel” what the Bernoulli equations calculate. He will explain how motorsport diffusers work and how creating vorticity (flow rotation) is used in to bring higher energy air into contact with surfaces that otherwise would have low performance. Then he’ll touch on how to create working cooling ducts and multi element wings. This talk assumes a good engineering brain but no specific prior knowledge of aerodynamics.

Aerodynamic mapping and optimization of race cars

In this presentation we will cover examples and tools to optimize the aerodynamic performance of race cars. For example: Porsche GT4 20 seconds faster on the Nürbürgring – how aerodynamics can move a car into a different league. Smaller race teams can cut costs by using publicly available 3D models for aerodynamic analysis to analyze and optimize their cars, as well as aero-mapping race cars using simulations. There will also be an explanation of how to use simulations to build aero maps to generate the data needed for car setup per circuit, per race.

Winning formula for running a student team in the Mazda MX5 Cup

A team of six students on the Minor Motorsport Engineering course at Fontys University in Eindhoven ran a Mazda MX5 Cup car during the 2019 season in the Benelux. This presentation shows what the team members learned during the season and how they were able to set up the car so that it became a top runner in this highly competitive cup class. The key elements of their success will be highlighted: organization, dedication and motivation, and a thorough focus on technology including tire management, data acquisition, aerodynamics, and excellent maintenance and preparation.

Race engineering – why you are blind if you don't use simulation

However, the 2019 running of the 24 hours of LeMans is a very striking example of why simulation needs to be at the core of what you do. A case study will be presented that utilized a number of the ChassisSim simulation toolboxes that were used to race engineer an LMP2 car.
